The reserves traveled to the State Hockey Centre with a degree of confidence after a great start in round one. The team saw the welcome return of long term club member, Demi Hulme, after a couple of years working and playing in London. It’s great to have her back.
The match didn’t get off to a great start with WestVic scoring early in the first half. However, the girls hit back not long after with Georgia “Fred” Fredricks getting on to the end of a messy through ball and scoring in the corner.
We weren’t playing with as much fluidity as we did in round one, with WestVic putting us under a bit more pressure. Some of our unforced turnovers proved costly, breaking down some promising moves forward and one resulting in a WestVic goal.
Chris Arrowsmith proved her worth in the penalty corner battery with a perfectly placed strike to the bottom right which brought us back onto level terms. Half time saw the score at two all.
The second half started brightly with Buddha using all her past goalie experience to get on the end of a ball that came of the post in open play and slot it past a somewhat confused goalie.
We traded goals again for the rest of the second half, with WestVic responding to Buddha’s gaol and then again after Jess Lee slotted one mid-way through the half. The girls had a significant amount of play for the rest of the half, keeping pressure on in our attacking half and creating a number of opportunities, but weren’t able to convert.
The game ended in a credible 4-4 draw and with the best start to the season we have had in a number of years. Lots of positives in a game where we didn’t see the best of the team.
